Airports in Southern Cyprus

There are two airports in Southern Cyprus based in Larnaca and Paphos. The main airport used to be in Nicosia, the capital of Cyprus but was abandoned in 1974.

Larnaca International Airport is located in the south east of the island and is now the main airport on the island.

Paphos International Airport has grown in size and is very popular with tourists and those living on the west coast of the island.

Flights To Northern Cyprus

If you are staying in the North of Cyprus (which is currently not an internationally recognized state - only Turkey recognizes it), your flight will be diverted to Turkey and then you will go on to your destination in the North of Cyprus. Turkey invaded Cyprus in 1974 and for the past 35 years has occupied the north of the island. Ercan Airport is not recognized by the IATA so flights must touch down in Turkey before continuing to Ercan Airport.

The High Court challenge launched by Cyprus Turkish Airlines (CTA) and its UK tour operator CTA Holidays Limited, to overturn the UK government's 35-year-old ban on direct flights from Britain to Northern Cyprus (which was enforced under the 1944 Chicago Convention on International Civil Aviation) began on the 18 May 2009. However, at the moment tourists are being taken by travel companies to Northern Cyprus via Larnaca Airport.
