Limassol Wine Festival
28th Aug - 9th Sept 2008
Limassol Wine Festival is held every year in the lovely municipal gardens along the sea-front near the old town of Limassol. Dionysus god of wine would surely approve of this amazing annual event which has grown into an international festival attracting thousands of people every year.
The festival celebrates the history of wine production in Cyprus with traditional music, dancing and of course lots of food and wine. Stalls and taverna-style eateries overflow with traditional Cypriot food and there are copious amounts of FREE wine throughout the festival!
On entering the festival from the south-side you are greeted with fountains and music and the huge statue of the famous 'Vraka Man' in traditional dress welcoming all to the festival.
Near the north-entrance is an open-air theater where many satirical plays, shadow theater (Karagiozis) and puppet shows are held.
To kick things off there's a fireworks display, Greek dancing, singing and traditional treading of the grapes. You can enjoy a variety of delicious Greek Cypriot food at amazingly good prices under the trees.
If you like bozouki the excellent 'Rembetika Parea' group can be enjoyed under the Vraka Man on certain evenings at 9.00pm. Other entertainment includes wine songs and dancing.
This is a wonderfully hedonistic festival celebrating the end of summer in a truly Greek style. Definitely not to be missed! The entrance fee is CYŁ2.50 and you pay 50 cents for a glass for the wine tasting (you can buy as many glasses as you like or use the same one). Another 50 cents will buy you a plastic wine bottle which fill for FREE with your favorite wine.
During the summer the lovely gardens are home to an open-air theater where you can enjoy musical productions and concerts. The plants, shrubs and large trees give welcome relief to the searing heat of summer. You can chill out, recharge your batteries with drinks and ice cream, then head back to the beach for another swim.
