It's surrounded by the Kyrenian mountains which, because of their shape, are known as the Pentadactylos (five fingered) mountains. This lovely city has been the capital of the island since the 11th century and has a history dating back to the Bronze Age.
The city has a labyrinth of tiny streets and pedestrianized squares full of cafès, bars and restaurants. The very famous Elefteria (Freedom) Square marks where the old city meets the new part. Sadly, this beautiful city is Europe's only city which has been divided by force and which remains divided. The 'Green Line' was originally drawn in 1964 and has remained since the Turkish invasion of 1974. The barren stretch of land which is known as the United Nations Buffer-Zone, divides the government-controlled south from the unrecognised, Turkish occupied North. However, with the recent loosening of restrictions, it's now possible to apply for a pass which will enable you to cross the green line. Part of the wall was recently demolished and so maybe there will soon be another way to enter the North of Nicosia. TOUR OF NICOSIA A bustling European city with well-known stores that are perfect for enthusiastic shoppers. You will then stop by the Archibishopric and visit the Cathedral of St. John and then go to the picturesque village of Lefkara that is world famous for its lace and silverware.
