Nicosia - Capital of Cyprus
Nicosia is the capital of Cyprus (Lefkosia in Greek), Europe's last remaining 'Divided City'. The historic centre is enclosed by 16th century Venetian walls, and is filled with ancient churches and medieval buildings.
The capital boasts excellent shops selling everything from local handicrafts to international branded wear. You can take a shopping and sightseeing tour from Paphos of this enchanting city which is the center for shopping in Cyprus.
The city is located in the centre of the island and has a population of 213,500 and is surrounded by the Kyrenian mountains which, because of their shape, are known as the Pentadactylos (five fingered) mountains.
This lovely city has been the capital of the island since the 11th century and has a history dating back to the Bronze Age.
The modern city centre has tree lined avenues and the lovely Old Town is surrounded by 16th century Venetian walls which resemble the shape of a hand grenade.
A few of the gates of the wall are still standing and the area around Famagusta Gate is well worth visiting.
The city has a labyrinth of tiny streets and pedestrianized squares full of cafès, bars and restaurants.
The very famous Elefteria (Freedom) Square marks where the old city meets the new part. Sadly, this beautiful city is Europe's only city which has been divided by force and which remains divided.
The 'Green Line' was originally drawn in 1964 and has remained since the Turkish invasion of 1974. The barren stretch of land which is known as the United Nations Buffer-Zone, divides the government-controlled south from the unrecognised, Turkish occupied North.
However, with the recent loosening of restrictions, it's now possible to apply for a pass which will enable you to cross the green line. Part of the wall was recently demolished and there will be another way to enter the North of the island.
Drive through the famous 16th century Venetian Walls of Nicosia before crossing the 'Green Line' into Northern Nicosia, and notice the immediate difference.
